My research focuses on understanding immune responses of Drosophila suzukii also known as the Spotted Winged Drosophila (SWD). SWD is an insect pest that lays its larvae in ripe soft-fleshed fruits such as raspberries, grapes, and cherries resulting in crop losses. Coming from East Asia, SWD is now found throughout the United States by means of human-assisted transportation. The significant economic loss due to SWD infestation causes a great demand for biocontrol methods for pest reduction/elimination. My main project is interested in understanding how SWD immune responses can be modulated in an applicable way to serves as a method of biocontrol. I am also interested in comparative genomics of the Drosophilidae immune system.
